Who we are

Palliative Pain and Symptom Management Consultants (PPSMCs) are nurses with advanced palliative care knowledge and expertise who educate and advise service providers on the best practices in palliative care. Since 1992, the PPSMC role has been a Ministry mandated nursing position across the province.

What are PPSMCs?

Defining our collective identity

PPSMCs are secondary-level expert nurses in palliative care funded by the Ministry of Health. Secondary level expertise refers to providing specialized support, guidance, and consultation to primary care providers. We assist frontline teams in delivering high quality palliative care by sharing advanced knowledge, mentoring, and helping implement best practice. PPSMCs, operate as connectors within the healthcare system, building strong interprofessional relationships with any health or social service provider supporting people in the community.

PPSMCs :

  • Offer consultative services to all interdisciplinary service providers
  • Provide case-based education and mentorship
  • Build capacity of frontline service providers and primary teams
  • Facilitate linkages with specialized palliative care resources
